unchained heart. 22 x 30 collograph. 2008

quick update with one of my favorites. I need to reprint this someday. I only have proofs left from the run I did in the spring. The small etching in the bottom corner is something I've also printed separately, but it worked so well with this one. I'm going to make a very strong effort to blog more about art, start dedicating time again to creating. I've got some sweet print ideas, and have gained a lot of inspiration from the Partisan the Sea show last night (partisanthesea.com).

next up: big 18 x 24 cupcakes, 6 color runs again, but on wood panels that I am thinking about putting a layer of resin on top or somethin' to make them extra tasty. the last cupcake made me crazy good at registration and finesse. so these should turn out well.

and finally, another old one... a finished mediocre image of the Hands! poster. It looks so much better in person, but what doesn't?!

just finished these kick ass prints based on an old WPA poster. if you can guess the subtle secret undertones, i'll give you a cookie.

some older work. i'm trying to get my online world organized for graduation, jobs, applications, etc. I also wanted to talk about some amazing artists I had the pleasure to check out tonight at MOCA Jacksonville.

the first, Chris Natrop. http://www.chrisnatrop.com, he does these fantastic cut paper installations of abstract organic forms. huge pieces that really transform the room. totally awesome.

the second, John Bailly. http://www.johnbailly.com, who does some really great oil paintings. many are abstract with some use of stencils, but others are more refined. I'm drawn to the use of type, contour drawings of faces and heads, the overall composition of his smaller works on watercolor paper are really fascinating. There wasn't a single piece in the show I wasn't drawn to or didn't find aesthetically pleasing or inspired by.

my goal this summer is to find new artists every week that I'm drawn to and inspired by. I've become so inspired by natrop's work, that I'm experimenting with some cut paper tonight.

it's been a while. i have a new etching to show off, that I fuckin' love.

this is pretty much the work i've been doing. I love it, I'm looking at grad schools for printmaking, it's a love affair that ain't quittin.

artistic shifts

this is my last real semester of college. i'm getting together this big cohesive body of work to be shown and judged by professors and peers, and I'm realizing that I'm tired of photography. I need a break. I've been in college for 5 years. I've been pumping out assignment after assignment, studio shoot after studio shoot, and it's never really been things I'm unbelievably passionate about. This is not to say they aren't quality work, but my heart wasn't really in it. I've been in a photographic rut for a while now. I don't feel passionate about it, and it translates to other parts of my life with a similar problem.

so what do you say to all these judges and critics when you realize you don't want to be a photographer right now? what happens when it takes a degree in photography to realize you aren't passionate about photography?

what i am playing around with, is printmaking. and it's going oh so well.

i'll try to shoot some slides and post them up. I recently won an honorable mention in a student juried exhibition on campus for an 18x24 collagraph that really turned out brilliantly.

i love finding relics from the past along hiking trails. I love capturing that history and age and seeing how things grow over and around these forgotten belongings.
I think this was a plow or cart of some kind.
